CHAPTER FIFTEEN

LUCAS

Maverick stared at the opposite wall as I paced up and down the waiting room. It had been two hours, and we’d already gone through seven cups of coffee each, more for something to do than because we needed the caffeine. Maverick looked like he needed more than caffeine. I hadn’t realised how bad he had become since I’d been away, and under the harsh fluorescent lights, he looked dreadful.

“You okay?” I asked, breaking my stride to stand and look down at him. He looked up at me and smiled.

“Bit tired, but yeah. I’m feeling good actually.”

“You look like shit.”

He grinned. “That’s what I love about you, Luc, the way you care about people’s feelings.”

I rolled my eyes. “You still reacting badly to those tablets?”

“Yeah, but Ethan said Doctor Smith said I could come off them before he died, so I haven’t taken any today, and I’m actually feeling pretty good. I haven’t thrown up in nearly twenty-four hours, so that’s a good day.”

I nodded. I didn’t want to say how worried I’d been about him, but his recovery had seemed to take forever. Wolves healed quickly, and Maverick was, or at least had been, strong and healthy. If he was feeling better, then that was one worry off my mind.

I sat down next to him. “How long do you think it’ll be?”

Maverick shrugged, his expression pensive. “That’s the million dollar question,” he replied. “It could be any minute now...” He trailed off, his gaze flicking to the clock again.

We lapsed back into silence for a while, the only sounds stemming from quietly beeping machines and the scurry of nurses and doctors.

Maverick sighed and leaned back in his chair. “It’s been a long week,” he commented, running a hand through his dark hair.

I nodded. “Is Ethan still piling on the work?”

“It wasn’t that. I noticed a couple of discrepancies in this month’s accounts, so I went back over it to check.”

I straightened up. “Did you fix it?”

Maverick shook his head. “Far from it. I found more, and a load last month, and the month before. I went back five months, and then I started on the yearly accounts for the last seven years.”

I stared at him. “You found something. On the island, you said there was something wrong.”

He nodded. “Evidence of embezzlement all the way through. I don’t know how far it goes back. I didn’t get that far. Hundreds of thousands of dollars, Lucas.”

“Ethan.” It was a statement rather than a question, but Maverick nodded anyway.

“There was no evidence of a land sale, but...”

“We’ve already got that,” I told him. “When Asher called to tell me Nova had gone into labour, he said she’d managed to unearth a folder containing all the documentation regarding the sale of several thousands of acres of woodland on Desolation to one Ethan Scott. The closing date of the sale is the day of the ceremony. He was going to hand the pack over to you and then run with the money.”

Maverick’s face darkened.
